The Dallas Mavericks are actively strengthening their backcourt. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the team has traded veteran Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round draft picks to the Detroit Pistons in return for shooting guard Quentin Grimes.
Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the second-round picks include a 2025 selection via the Toronto Raptors and two picks in 2028.

This trade not only brings in Quentin Grimes but also offers Dallas financial flexibility. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon mentions that this move enables the Mavericks to allocate a substantial portion of the $12.9 million nontaxpayer midlevel exception to Derrick Jones Jr., who is a key re-signing target for Mavericks GM Nico Harrison.
Quentin Grimes, who inked a guaranteed four-year, $11.1 million contract with the New York Knicks in 2021, is entering the final year of his deal, earning $4.2 million next season. He is also eligible for a contract extension before the season commences.
The 24-year-old Grimes played last season with both the Knicks and the Pistons. In February, he was traded from New York to Detroit in a deal that saw Bojan Bogdanovic move to the Knicks.
Grimes only participated in six games with the Pistons before being sidelined for the remainder of the season due to muscle soreness from a bone bruise injury in his knee sustained in January.
