The Denver Nuggets are reportedly targeting Klay Thompson, a four-time NBA champion, to complement Nikola Jokic.
Klay Thompson is seen as a potential replacement for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who has opted out of his player option and is entering free agency.
According to a report from The Athletic by Sam Amick and Anthony Slater, the Nuggets’ interest in Thompson comes despite their financial constraints due to high salaries like those of Jokic, Michael Porter Jr., and Jamal Murray. However, Caldwell-Pope’s decision frees up $15.4 million, potentially enabling the Nuggets to pursue Thompson through a sign-and-trade.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia 76ers are also in the mix for Thompson, aiming to bolster their roster alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Thompson offers similar on-court benefits to Paul George but with a more manageable contract and injury history.

As the June 30 deadline approaches, the competition for Thompson’s services intensifies between these NBA contenders. His decision will undoubtedly reshape the league landscape.
Beyond Denver, the Dallas Mavericks, buoyed by newfound financial flexibility after trading Tim Hardaway Jr., are also eyeing Thompson. They see him as an ideal addition to enhance their starting lineup following a strong NBA Finals appearance. Thompson’s scoring prowess and sharpshooting would complement stars like Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis in Dallas.
Thompson, entering the later stages of his career, is expected to command a two- or three-year contract. Despite not being at his prime, he maintained impressive stats this season with 17.9 PPG and a 38.7% three-point shooting average. The Golden State Warriors, open to a sign-and-trade, could facilitate a move, with the Mavericks possessing assets to negotiate a favorable deal.
