Derya Yannier, the general manager of Fenerbahce, commented on the situation with Nick Calathes and also spoke about Arturs Zagars.
First and foremost, Yannier addressed Nick Calathes’ status within the team from the Bosporus and stated that he is still a member of the “Yellow Canaries.” He also hinted at what influenced the decision for the Greek player to stay.
“The situation has changed. Nick Calathes is still a part of our team. If the situation changes again, we will look for another solution. However, this is our team for the beginning of the season. Neto’s injury was a significant blow to us. We believed that he fit into the team’s chemistry”.
After that, he turned his attention to Arturs Zagars. The Latvian player who had an outstanding World Cup has been loaned to BC Wolves, and Yannier stated that it’s important for him to gain experience there.
“We are looking forward to Zagars. The market for point guards is quite thin. It’s challenging to find a traditional, well-rounded point guard. Zagars is close to completing his offensive skill set. He also has his weaknesses. He needs to improve and prove himself as a defender. He had some issues with consistency due to injury. It’s crucial for him to gain experience in the EuroCup”, said the Fener’s general manager.
Finally, when asked if Fenerbahce had signed all the players they wanted, Yannier had an answer that piqued curiosity.
“I would be dishonest if I said we signed all the players we wanted. There were players we desired but couldn’t bring in. We can say that we’ve secured most of the players from our initial list”, he concluded.
