Dimitris Giannakopoulos, the president of Panathinaikos, launched a scathing attack on the Greek Basketball Federation after winning the title against Olympiacos.
The Athens Greens triumphed 87:82 in the decisive Game 5, securing their 40th Greek League title with a 3-2 win over their rivals from Piraeus.
“When we built the team last summer, we did it in a way to win everything, even the referees. We could not have imagined such a refereeing orgy in the final. From today, we will work hard to build an even stronger team so this doesn’t happen again. I publicly state that the entire Greek Basketball Federation needs to change. What happened in the final is a disgrace,” Giannakopoulos said.
“The Panathinaikos fans understood my message. I told them there are many traps around us, and we can easily fall into any of them. Trust the driver! Thank you for the incredible support, the best in the world!” he added.
Giannakopoulos also addressed the case of Kostas Sloukas:
“Now that things have fallen into place, I must say a big thank you, I owe you that. A big thanks to the Olympiacos management and their coach for deciding to let the greatest Greek athlete join Panathinaikos, to experience everything we have experienced this year. And this is just the beginning.”
