Dimitris Itoudis is no longer the head coach of Greece. After stepping down from the national team, the Fenerbahçe coach addressed the public and explained his decision.
Greece didn’t achieve notable results in the FIBA World Cup, being eliminated in the second phase with two wins and three losses. Following the tournament in Manila, Dimitris Itoudis left the national team.
After departing from the national team, Itoudis addressed the public through his Twitter account.
“In March 2022, I was honored by the President of the Basketball Federation, and I accepted the invitation to become the head coach of Greece. It’s a position I’ve always regarded with honor and felt an obligation to take on.
I gave my all for our national team to achieve success. Despite all the challenges that we faced, I believe we fought hard and represented our country with respect.
After the World Cup, the national team enters a year in which it will compete for a spot in the Olympic Games. The qualification tournament will take place just a few weeks after the EuroLeague teams finish their domestic league commitments.”
“From the very moment I took over the national team, I wanted us to unite. This is the team of all Greeks, and we have an obligation to put that above our personal desires. In this specific case, my personal desire is to lead the team in the Olympic Games qualifiers.
However, my club commitments end just a few weeks before the qualification tournament. These commitments don’t allow me to be available to the extent needed for such an important event.
Therefore, in consultation with the president of the basketball federation, we have agreed that I will be there whenever the national team needs any free advice.” – as stated in Itoudis’s post.
