Italy aims to host the FIBA World Cup in 2031 after positive discussions between the government and the national federation.
Ambitions are growing in the Apennines. The Italian Basketball Federation (FIP) has announced its desire to organize the World Cup seven years from now. The government and federation officials have had fruitful discussions, and this could lead to an official announcement of the candidacy to host the tournament.
Italy has hosted a major competition only once before, in 2015, when they organized the EuroBasket for women. If successful, Italy would become the first European country to host the FIBA World Cup since Spain in 2014. Since then, the World Cup has been held exclusively in Asian countries. Four years ago, it was in China, followed by the Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan, with Qatar set to host the tournament in 2027.
