The Atlanta Hawks, unexpectedly landing the top pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, initially targeted Alex Sarr as their potential No. 1 choice.
However, Sarr’s decision not to participate in workouts with the team has altered their strategy. According to draft expert Jonathan Givony, this development has thrust Zaccharie Risascher and Donovan Clingan into contention for the coveted spot.
Despite efforts from the Hawks to schedule a workout with Alex Sarr, the French center has yet to engage with the team. As a result, Clingan, renowned for his recent standout performances in workouts and interviews across the league, is emerging as a strong candidate for the top selection.
“Clingan’s exceptional showing in recent workouts, demonstrating impressive shooting, passing skills, and a keen basketball IQ, has significantly boosted his draft stock,” noted Givony. The 7’2″ center from UConn, under Coach Dan Hurley, showcased averages of 13.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game last season, illustrating his potential to fill a crucial role as a long-term replacement for Clint Capela alongside Trae Young or Dejounte Murray.
With Sarr’s absence potentially shifting the Hawks’ draft strategy, Clingan has emerged as a compelling alternative for the team’s future plans.
