Joe Mazzulla, Boston Celtics head coach, has found an unconventional source of motivation for his team in their quest for the NBA championship: UFC fights.
Amid their commanding 3-0 lead against the Dallas Mavericks in the Finals, Mazzulla has been using footage from UFC matches, including recent bouts like UFC 302, to instill crucial lessons about focus and resilience under pressure.
In press conferences leading up to pivotal games, Joe Mazzulla has emphasized the parallels between the intensity of UFC bouts and NBA playoff games. He draws on examples like UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira’s reaction to adversity, highlighting how staying composed and focused can turn the tide in a match.
Reflecting on one memorable instance, Mazzulla recalled Pereira’s response to a low blow compared to another fighter’s distraction and subsequent defeat. “There’s a lot of them (that I show),” Mazzulla remarked. “Usually every single fight. But I think it was (UFC) 302… The guy gets hit in the n*ts, complains to the ref and complains to the referee and gets distracted, and then he gets choked out the next round. So he lost his focus. You see Pereira gets hit in the n*ts, looks at the referee, knocks the guy out five seconds later.”
Mazzulla’s coaching philosophy is centered on maintaining concentration and avoiding complacency, especially with the championship within reach. “So it’s the approach to what happens to you and how you handle it. The closer you think you are to beating someone, the closer you are to getting your a** kicked. So tonight I expect the best out of Dallas and we’ve got to be ready for a fight,” he cautioned, stressing the importance of readiness for every game.
As the Celtics continue their pursuit of their 18th championship title, Mazzulla’s unconventional motivational tactics may prove pivotal in keeping his team focused and resilient through the challenges ahead.
