Estonia secures a 67-65 victory over Israel in the third round of Olympic Games pre-qualifications, Group A, advancing their record to 2-1.
The Estonia displayed a superior strategy as demonstrated by their early lead and a comfortable eight-point margin by the end of the first quarter (20-12). However, the Roman Sorkin-led Israel in the second quarter, closing the gap to a mere two points by halftime (36-34).
Despite an evenly matched third period, Estonia’s basketball players held onto their two-point lead going into the fourth quarter and ultimately secured a significant victory as Israel failed to mount a comeback in the remaining periods.
Kaspar Treier was crucial in Estonia win with 16 points, seven rebounds, and foru assists, closing things up at the end with a clutch two-point play. On the other side, Roman Sorkin went close to a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Bar Timor added 15 points
Estonia, and Israel managed to therefore advance to the semifinals, likely waiting for Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the final phases of the tournament to book a ticket for next year’s FIBA Pre-Olympic Tournaments.
In the last round of Group C, Turkey defeated Ukraine by 85:72. During the first quarter, the teams took turns in the lead, resulting in a tie score of 25-25 after ten minutes of play. However, Turkey pulled ahead with a stronger performance in the latter part of the first half, ending the half with a lead of 49-41. The Turks secured their victory during the third period, achieving a 15-point advantage.
Alperen Sengun led Turkey to victory with 30 points, while Olexandr Mishula was the top scorer for Ukraine with 14 points.
Turkey completed the group stage with a perfect three wins, while this marked Ukraine’s first defeat. Both teams have secured their spot in the next phase of the competition.
