Gianmarco Pozzecco is a new name being mentioned by Italian media in connection with the coaching job at Asvel.
After T.J. Parker’s departure, the coaching position for the French vice-champions became vacant. Tony Parker’s top choice was German national team coach Gordon Herbert, but the German Basketball Federation didn’t give the green light, so the official collaboration didn’t happen, even though practically all details had been agreed upon.
The new candidate is Gianmarco Pozzecco, as reported by the Italian basketball portal “Eurodevotion.” This would be the Italian coach’s first job as a head coach in the EuroLeague. He has had coaching stints with teams like Orlandina, Varese, Fortitudo Bologna, Dinamo Sassari, and he has worked as an assistant coach with Cedevita and Olimpia Milano.
Pozzecco took over as the head coach of the Italian national team in 2022. In September of that year, he led Italy to eliminate Serbia in the Round of 16 at the EuroBasket.
Serbia was defeated by Italy during the group stage of the World Cup as well, but later on, Italy failed to advance to the knockout stage of the tournament.
Asvel’s next game will be in the EuroLeague, where they will host Virtus Bologna.
