The future of the Golden State Warriors appears uncertain, with Klay Thompson’s impending free agency adding to the complexity of the situation.
Anthony Slater of The Athletic reported that while the Golden State Warriors express a desire to retain Thompson, there hasn’t been a sense of urgency in addressing his contract situation. This lack of urgency has raised doubts about Klay Thompson’s return to the team.
“The Warriors maintain a desire to retain Thompson at the right price once other aspects of their roster retool get clarified,” Slater noted. “But they haven’t exactly been beating down his door to work out the framework for an extension (which can be signed at any time). In turn, the 34-year-old Thompson appears ready to test free-agency waters, exploring external options for the first time in his career.”
However, some league insiders believe that the Warriors may ultimately decide to keep their Big 3 intact, despite the financial implications. This trio, consisting of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Thompson, has been instrumental in the team’s six NBA Finals appearances and four championships.
