Goran Dragic will officially conclude his highly successful basketball career in the summer of 2024, spanning two decades.
The basketball journey will come to an official end for the captain of the golden Slovenian national team from EuroBasket 2017, Goran Dragic. In August 2024, he will organize a farewell game in Ljubljana to mark the conclusion of his sports career. The event will last for two days, with the presence of numerous notable figures, as announced by the organizers, Spontanzo company, and the Goran Dragic Foundation.
At the age of 37, Dragic is currently without a club this season, having last played for the Milwaukee Bucks in the previous season. It was reported that he was in talks to return to Miami in the summer, but the deal was ultimately not reached. Dragic revealed last year that he intended to stay on the court for one more season, but now, alongside a special event, he has officially announced that he will hang up his basketball shoes this summer.
Goran Dragic will share the details next Thursday at a press conference
Goran Dragic will share the details next Thursday at a press conference in Ljubljana. The event will be supported by the municipality of Ljubljana. The press conference, in addition to Dragic, will feature the mayor of Ljubljana, Zoran Jankovic, and a representative of the organizers, Matej Avanzo.
They will discuss the official farewell game, a two-day charitable action, the reasons behind organizing Goran’s basketball farewell, the exact date of the August event, the start of ticket sales, and unveil some of the star participants in the sports spectacle. The proceeds from the event will go to the charitable cause chosen by the Goran Dragic Foundation, the organizers added in the public statement.
In the last two seasons, he has been a member of four teams (Toronto, Brooklyn, Chicago, Milwaukee), where he did not find what he was looking for. He had his best NBA performances in a Miami jersey. The Slovenian guard shone in 2017 with an average of 20.3 points, 5.8 assists, and 3.8 rebounds, earning an All-Star selection in 2018.
For many years, he has been an indispensable member of the Slovenian national team
The experienced Slovenian basketball player shone in the Miami Heat’s 2020 playoffs, averaging 19.1 points, 4.4 assists, and 4.1 rebounds. This performance helped the Heat reach the finals for the first time since 2014, with Dragic playing a crucial role. Unfortunately, his plans in the grand finals against the LA Lakers were thwarted by an injury.
For many years, he has been an indispensable member of the Slovenian national team. As the golden captain, MVP, player with the most appearances in official games, and the all-time leading scorer for the Slovenian national team, this summer marks his second attempt to officially retire from international duty.
He has recorded 90 official appearances, scoring 1,095 points in official games and 1,760 points in all competitions—a legacy that has left an indelible mark on Slovenian basketball.
