Gordon Herbert, the coach of the German national team, confirmed to Bild that he will not leave the bench of the world champions.
The Canadian-Finnish coach achieved great success with the Germans this summer, winning the FIBA World Cup. His next engagement could be in the EuroLeague. There are rumors that he might take over Asvel and replace T.J. Parker. However, the German Federation is not allowing him to sign a contract with the French team and simultaneously lead the Germans. He briefly confirmed that he will not leave the position of the “Nationalmannschaft” selector.
“No one needs to worry. I will not leave the national team,” Gordon Herbert stated succinctly and clearly.
There are several coaches in the EuroLeague who manage both a club and a national team. These include Ergin Ataman (Turkey, Panathinaikos), Kazys Maksvytis (Lithuania, Zalgiris), and Luca Banchi (Latvia, Virtus). It remains to be seen whether Herbert will join this group. His contract with the German Federation is set to expire in 2025.
The Canadian-born expert has two medals with Germany. At the EuroBasket 2022, he won bronze, and this year, he secured the brightest accolade. At the FIBA World Cup, he won a gold medal. They defeated the Serbian national team in the final.
