Baskonia is a team synonymous with the EuroLeague, but given their poor performance in the domestic championship, their spot could be at risk.
The Basque team currently ranks ninth in the Endesa League, which means they are not in the playoff zone. The EuroLeague has a rule that predicts failure in the domestic championship for one of its members. Therefore, the elite competition can suspend the license of a club. The rule states the following:
“The club’s license may be suspended if it finished among the teams in the lower half of the final standings in the domestic championship in the recently concluded season. For the purposes of this article, if the domestic championship has an odd number of teams, the lower half includes half plus 0.5.”
Endesa League consists of 18 teams, and Dusko Ivanovic’s team is two games ahead of the tenth-placed Joventut. However, the team from Badalona has a better head-to-head record.
In the last two rounds of the Spanish championship, Baskonia will play against Murcia and Real Madrid. The likelihood of this team being excluded in this manner is very low because this season they entered the EuroLeague playoffs, where they were defeated by the “Los Blancos”.
