Latvia convincingly defeated Georgia on their court in Riga with 83:55 and successfully started the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
At the beginning, it was already clear that the guests would hardly be surprised, given that Tornike Shengelia was clearly not ready, as he sat out the entire match.
Latvia felt that this was a reason to step up even more, so already at the early stage of the second quarter, they began to break the resistance of the weakened rival.
Very quickly, the home team reached a big plus 21, which is the difference with which they waited for the third quarter, so they were getting closer to win. Alexander Mamukelashvili was the only one to resist Luca Banchi’s squad, but it was nowhere near enough to threaten Latvia in any way.
On the other hand, the home team was constantly at around 40 percent shooting for three points, established a rebounding dominance, but also a dominance in assists, so it was not difficult for them to close the game.
The most deserving of Latvia’s win were Arturs Strautins with 18 points, while Mareks Meyeris added 11. Mamukelashvili added 14 for Georgia.
In the next round, Latvia plays against Philippines, while Georgia is free. The two best teams from the group go to the next stage.
