Janis Timma didn’t take the news lightly when he found out that coach Luca Banchi didn’t include him in the final 12 players for the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Although the Latvian had recovered from an injury, the coach decided not to include him in the team, despite his good physical condition.
In response to this decision, Janis Timma took to his Instagram to address the basketball community.

“This decision has been one of the most painful in my national team career. Over the years, I’ve always proudly represented Latvia, no matter the circumstances. As you know, I injured my ankle in Liepaja, but now I am fully healthy and ready. There’s no pain or any limitation in my case. Even if injured, I would play for the pride and honor of Latvia. Unfortunately, I didn’t make the decision, and I can’t understand why, and probably never will.”
“During the summer, I engaged in various leagues to get in shape for the national team and the FIBA World Cup. I believe I’ve demonstrated good skills in the previous period. In the end, a decision is a decision. I hesitated to address this issue, but the significant public interest prompted me to speak out. My intention is to put an end to various stories. Thanks to everyone who dedicated themselves to keeping me healthy for potential matches.”
“In the coming period, I will discuss with clubs in Europe to choose the best destination for me. I will continue to work, maintain my form, and be 100% healthy and ready for upcoming challenges. All the best, guys. I’m with you, our country – Latvia!”
Latvia is making its debut in the FIBA World Cup in Group H, with Canada, Lebanon, and France as opponents.
Banchi’s final selection includes: Rodions Kurucs, Kristers Zoriks, Arturs Zagars, Arturs Kurucs, Davis Bertans, Dairis Bertans, Rolands Smits, Arturs Strautins, Klavs Cavars, Aigars Skele, Andrejs Grazulis, and Anzejs Pasecniks.
