Jordi Fernandez shared his initial impressions at a press conference after Canada’s victory over Spain with a score of 88-85.
With this triumph, the Canadians secured the top spot in Group L and advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIBA World Cup.
“Congratulations to Spain. This is a great program; we started from the bottom, and now we’re here in the quarterfinals. The guys achieved their goal, showing the definition of a winning team. It wasn’t perfect; we need to keep improving and believe that we can do better than this. We have room for improvement, and there’s a lot left to work on, and now we’re heading to the Philippines.”
The fourth quarter belonged to Canada – 27:12, which was a crucial moment for a significant comeback and a well-deserved victory.
“We believed, played solid team defense, executed well, rebounded… that’s how we found our way. Through collective effort and important points from Shai, we achieved our set goal. It’s very important that we’re going to the Olympic Games. Right now, we need to focus solely on the next game; we have three more left in the championship. We’re knocking on the door, we want more, we believe, we’re young, and this is valuable experience for us. We have a multi-year program ahead of us.”
Jordi Fernandez also emphasizes how much he and his team are enjoying the journey of success they are building.
“We’re enjoying this; it means a lot to all of us. It’s confirmation that we’re on the right path. I’m happy for all the people involved and for the coaches who were here before me and did a lot for the program. Congratulations to them as well. We’re happy and ready for the quarterfinals.”
Canada will face Slovenia in the quarterfinals, and Fernandez mentions that his team could work on specific aspects of their game before that matchup.
“I believe we can improve our running game, work on our fast breaks. We need to keep working and gaining experience.”
The Spanish coach took the opportunity to praise the organization of the FIBA World Cup.
“This tournament is fantastic; the organization is at the highest level. It’s top-class, there’s excellent defense being played, the arenas are mostly packed, there’s support, and it provides energy. I can only express my gratitude.”
At the end of the press conference, Fernandez thanked his coaching staff, whom he believes has significantly contributed to his development as a coach.
“I’ve learned a lot about leadership, showcasing abilities, communication. English is not my native language. I have to thank them; I know it’s early, but thanks to both of them.”
