It appears that Houston Rockets basketball player Kevin Porter Jr. will no longer be a part of the franchise, according to the well-informed Athletic.
Porter was recently arrested for domestic violence after being accused by his girlfriend. This incident was just one in a series for the American basketball player, who had previously encountered legal troubles. He had been charged with the same offense before, and a gun was found in his possession in November 2020.
After a certain period of hiatus, he signed with Houston, but on a non-guaranteed contract, precisely because the Texas team’s management was aware of the player’s off-court behavior.
Instead of the originally agreed-upon sum of 82.5 million euros, Porter would only be guaranteed 16.9 million if the Rockets decided to release him.
However, even that 16.9 million in the first year is now a problem for Houston, as there is a possibility that the player may not be available to the team. That’s why the management is determined to trade Porter. In exchange for that money, they would acquire someone who can immediately contribute to the roster.
The former USC University student has been released from jail on a $75,000 bail. The trial is scheduled for October 16, and the NBA league has initiated an investigation into the entire case.
Houston is expected to be a more significant factor in the upcoming season, following acquisitions such as Fred VanVleet and Dillon Brooks, as well as the fourth overall pick in the draft, Amen Thompson.
