Kostas Sloukas is clearly outraged by all the events that marked the final series of the Greek Basket League.
He can certainly be characterized as a key figure on the chessboard of coach Ergin Ataman. Panathinaikos came back after a 0-2 deficit in the first two games and then won three times in a row for their milestone 40th Greek championship title.
Penalties from the Greek Basketball Federation were issued several times, both for Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, and their owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos. He even appeared at Game 5 despite receiving a three-month suspension from attending sporting events just a few days earlier.
Another reason for tension is Kostas Sloukas, who last summer decided to exchange the red and white stripes for the green jersey of Athens. Because of this, he was targeted by Olympiacos fans and some former teammates.
“I am very concerned, especially about the behavior of players who will be my teammates in the national team. I would never attack a teammate from the national team. I’m not concerned about Isaiah Canaan, I don’t compete with him. I was concerned about the behavior of the people with whom I will spend days in the national team. I was an easy target for Olympiacos fans, but apologies came in private messages. I still have them. I am clean, I do not provoke anyone, and maybe I have my ego but I do not offend or humiliate anyone. I don’t need any apologies. I don’t need anything,” said Kostas Sloukas, and continued:
“The national team is not a question for me, I have been playing for the national team since I was 11 years old. My father took me to games as a boy and I always wore the national team jersey. I understand what it means and how much it means to people, and that’s why I’m sad about everything that happened in the final. It’s most important to me to fight for Greece, but I am very disappointed.”
