Luca Banchi, Italian coach is a new head coach of Virtus Bologna. The information has been confirmed by the club from Bologna.
He is taking over from Sergio Scariolo, who was fired due to negative comments about the club’s management.
Banchi recently arrived from the FIBA World Cup, where he was named the coach of the tournament after achieving remarkable success with the Latvia national team, securing a fifth-place finish.
On their way to this placement, the Latvians defeated teams like France and Lithuania, and they were just one shot away from eliminating Germany and reaching the FIBA World Cup semifinals.
Banchi spent the majority of his coaching career in Italy, with his most notable stints being with Montepaschi Siena and Olimpia Milano. With “The Fashion City” team, he won the Serie A title twice and the Italian Cup once.
Luca Banchi has also coached in Greece, Germany, and Russia. He even spent some time as an assistant coach in the G-League. In 2020, he took over as the head coach of the Latvian national team.
During the previous season, the Italian coach was at the helm of SIG Strasbourg.
