Mathias Lessort spoke to “Sport Klub” about his adaptation period in Panathinaikos, and he couldn’t avoid mentioning his experience at Partizan.
During his time in the black and white jersey, he became a fan favorite through his dedication and performances on the court. His departure was a tough moment for both him and the fans. The French center is currently going through the process of adapting to everything that Panathinaikos has brought to him.
Change of coach
Zeljko Obradovic and Mathias Lessort had a unique relationship in Belgrade, and now, in the role of the coach, it will be Ergin Ataman, whom the Frenchman highlights as one of the main reasons for changing teams.
“I am very excited to play for him; it will be something special. We are still getting to know each other, as is the whole team. I am getting familiar with the system and how the coach will use me in the upcoming season. It will be interesting. I haven’t been here long, so it’s hard for me to compare. Coach Ataman is one of the reasons I came here.”
Lessort about Relationship with the fans
“Honestly, I can’t come here and say that I will create the same thing I had at Partizan. That was a special connection. I had an incredible season, but even before the start of last season, I didn’t think it would be like that. It happened naturally. Now, I will give everything I have for this team, and then we’ll see how the fans react. I don’t want to compare Partizan and Panathinaikos; I only know that it’s a blessing to be able to play in front of such fans, who are among the best in the world. It would be a mistake to consciously try to repeat what happened at Partizan; I’ll take it step by step, and we’ll see.”
Expectations for the new season
“For now, the priority is to progress and get to know each other. Everyone should understand their role, and the coach will figure out how to best utilize all the players at his disposal. It doesn’t matter how you start the season but how you finish it, as we saw last season at Partizan. We were one of the best teams in the EuroLeague when the playoffs started, and I think our goal is the same now.”
Mathias Lessort about Ioannis Papapetrou and Luca Vildoza as teammates
“Ioannis and I definitely get along great from our time at Partizan. We got really close last year; it was a fantastic group. We’re all still in touch and will remain like a family for a long time.
I know Vildoza well; I scouted him often. Both of us are looking forward to playing together, and he was one of the best players for Crvena zvezda last season,” said Mathias Lessort.
“Kevin Punter is trying to steal my role…”
“I’ve seen Punter trying to steal my role in the fan chants. Just kidding (laughs). I hope we’ll play against each other in the EuroLeague Final Four.
I also met Partizan fans here, and we exchanged greetings. It’s always nice to see,” concluded the French center.
