The Dallas Mavericks defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Game 1 of the Western Conference finals, but there were lingering referee controversies after the game.
Dallas Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the Western Conference NBA playoff finals with a 108:105 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. In a tense game, the difference-maker was Luka Doncic with key shots and defensive plays in the final minutes. The Slovenian finished the game with 33 points, eight assists, and six rebounds.
However, a potentially crucial moment was also a referee decision in the closing stages of the game. With a minute and 40 seconds left, and Dallas leading by two, Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns grabbed a missed shot from his teammate and dunked to tie the game. Unfortunately for the Timberwolves, the referees nullified the basket, calling it basket interference.
In the NBA, it is prohibited to touch the ball while it is above the rim, and the referees judged that Towns had done just that. They decided to review the decision with additional footage, which showed it was a close call, with fans divided on the correctness of the decision. After the disallowed basket, the Mavericks went up by four, and there was no comeback for the Timberwolves.
