The New Orleans Pelicans have decided to utilize the last of the three first-round picks they acquired from the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2019 Anthony Davis trade in 2025, as reported by CBS Sports, citing ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
This decision means the Lakers will keep their first-round selection in the upcoming draft on June 26, where they hold the 17th overall pick. Consequently, the Pelicans will only have their own first-round pick at No. 21 in this year’s draft.
According to the terms of the Anthony Davis trade, the Pelicans must use the remaining pick by 2025, marking the final Lakers’ asset from that transaction.
The high-profile trade, executed shortly before the 2019 draft, brought the Pelicans three Lakers players: Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, and Josh Hart. Currently, only Ingram remains with New Orleans, and he is entering the final year of his contract.
In 2019, the Pelicans won the draft lottery and selected Duke standout Zion Williamson with the first overall pick. They then traded the Lakers’ No. 4 overall pick for the eighth and 17th overall picks, along with the 35th overall choice in the second round.
With these selections, the New Orleans Pelicans drafted center Jaxson Hayes, guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and guard Didi Louzada. However, none of these players are still with the team.
New Orleans also used a second Lakers’ first-round pick in 2022 to draft Australian wing Dyson Daniels with the eighth overall pick.
