Gianmarco Pozzecco is the new coach of the French EuroLeague team Asvel, the club has announced. The Italian will make his debut against Virtus Bologna.
Tony Parker’s first choice for the head coach of Asvel was Gordon Herbert, who is the coach of the German national team. Herbert was interested, but he didn’t receive permission from the German Basketball Federation. The selection then turned to Gianmarco Pozzecco, the coach of the Italian national team, who didn’t face similar issues, and the contract was signed.
“I’m very happy to welcome Gianmarco! He will bring a new impulse to our season by injecting his immense energy and high-level experience. I can’t wait to see the first effects of his arrival on the court,” said Asvel’s president, Tony Parker.
For the Italian coach, this is his first coaching position in the EuroLeague as a head coach. He has previously coached teams such as Orlandina, Varese, Fortitudo Bologna, Dinamo Sassari, and also served as an assistant coach at Cedevita and Olimpia Milano.
