Milwaukee Bucks’ guard Patrick Beverley believes it’s high time for former NBA star Sam Cassell to step into the spotlight as a head coach in the league.
Drafted by the Houston Rockets as the 24th overall pick in 1993, Sam Cassell earned a reputation for delivering in clutch moments, contributing significantly to his team’s success, including winning two championship rings in 1994 and 1995 with the Rockets. Throughout his career, he showcased his talent for various teams like the Los Angeles Clippers and Minnesota Timberwolves.
Cassell’s impact extended beyond his playing days. Joining the Boston Celtics in the 2008-09 season, his contributions off the bench proved invaluable, particularly during the NBA Finals matchup against Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2009, where he secured his third and final championship as a player.
Transitioning to coaching after retirement, Cassell started as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards in 2009, currently holding the same role with the Celtics this season. Despite his extensive experience and contributions, Cassell has yet to land a head coaching position.
According to Patrick Beverley, Cassell’s time has come. In a video shared on his official X account, Beverley voiced his support for Cassell’s candidacy for a full-time head coaching role.
Cassell’s name has circulated in coaching discussions, notably linked to the vacant coaching position with the Los Angeles Lakers. While initially considered a strong contender, recent developments suggest UConn’s Dan Hurley may be the frontrunner for the job.
Nevertheless, Beverley remains confident that Cassell will eventually get his opportunity to lead an NBA team from the sidelines. For him, it’s merely a matter of time before the former Bucks guard shines in a head coaching capacity.
