Spanish basketball icon Sergio Rodriguez has announced his retirement from professional basketball at the age of 38.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Sergio Rodriguez reflected on his storied career and expressed gratitude for the journey.
“The day has come. After 20 years as a basketball player, I would like to share with all of you a decision that will change my life. The time has come to put an end to my sports career. I feel that this season, in which we have won the Liga Endesa title, Copa del Rey, and the Super Cup, is the perfect time to say goodbye.
I always dreamed of retiring while being physically well and winning my last game, and now life has offered me this gift. Ending my career at Real Madrid is a dream come true, and even more so after winning five titles in the last two seasons, including the historic EuroLeague triumph in Kaunas.”
Sergio Rodriguez debuted with Estudiantes at just 17 and went on to play for some of the world’s top teams. His career highlights include playing for Real Madrid, where he won numerous titles, including five in the last two seasons. He also fulfilled a personal dream by playing in the NBA for five seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, New York Knicks, and Philadelphia 76ers.
Rodriguez also had a distinguished international career, representing Spain and winning seven medals, including world and European championships.
