South Sudan has sent a message of support to Borisa Simanic, who suffered an injury during a match in the FIBA World Cup against their team.
In the third-round group B match, Serbia defeated South Sudan. During that game, Nuni Omot hit Borisa Simanic. Due to complications that arose, the Serbian representative had to have his kidney removed and is currently in recovery.
Throughout the day, Simanic has been receiving messages of support from former and current national team players. Among those who have expressed their support is the Basketball Federation of South Sudan.
“The Basketball Federation of South Sudan has today received information that Borisa Simanic had to undergo a kidney removal procedure as a result of the incident during the match between Serbia and our national team. The incident involved contact between our representative Nuni Omot and the Serbian basketball player.
The referees reviewed the situation on video and decided that there was no foul by Omot. At that time, neither the federations nor the players were aware of the severity of Simanic’s injury. The event was unintentional and unfortunate,” the message stated.
Nuni Omot himself spoke out a few days ago, expressing his concern and apology to Simanic.
“I heard that Simanic is in the hospital, and I apologize to him. I had no intention of making any ‘dirty’ play. I hope he recovers quickly, and I will pray for him. He will be in my prayers. I am not a dirty player, I never have been, and I sincerely apologize from the bottom of my heart,” Omot stated.
