Stephen A. Smith, NBA analyst, commented on the position of the Los Angeles Lakers’ coach and potential candidates for the position.
Following Dan Hurley’s decision to remain at UConn rather than join the Los Angeles Lakers, the focus shifted towards JJ Redick as the leading candidate for the vacancy.
However, the landscape changed with Monty Williams becoming available after parting ways with the Detroit Pistons. ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith weighed in on the development during a segment on First Take.
“While JJ Redick has been heavily discussed, the Lakers should seriously consider Monty Williams now that he’s on the market,” remarked Stephen A. Smith. “Jeanie Buss, whom I greatly respect, deserves to find the best fit. Rob Pelinka’s role is crucial, and even Kurt Rambis, whom I’ve kidded about, has his place. It’s a collective effort, and Monty Williams deserves serious consideration.”
“I know we’ve been talking a lot about JJ [Redick]. With Monty Williams available, that is a situation the Los Angeles Lakers should look at… I’m rooting for [Jeanie Buss] to find the right person for the job.”

With Hurley’s refusal and Williams’ newfound availability, the Lakers’ coaching search takes an intriguing turn. Previously, it appeared to be a battle between Redick and James Borrego, the New Orleans Pelicans assistant also linked with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ coaching position. Williams’ entry adds complexity to the Lakers’ decision-making process as they approach the conclusion of their search.
