US national team coach Steve Kerr spoke after the semifinal game and the defeat to the German national team at the FIBA World Cup.
Kerr’s team failed to reach the top two in the tournament, as they were defeated by Germany.
“They were fantastic. They deserved to win. Whenever we had a run, they had an answer. They did what they had to do, and I’m proud of my guys for fighting, but we couldn’t do more,” said Kerr.
It was the second time the USA allowed 100 points and the second time they lost a game.
“That was the main reason for the loss. We weren’t up to par defensively. Dennis Schroder is fast, hard to guard; I give him credit. He compromises your defense. We made mistakes. From the start, you have to set the tone, and Andreas Obst was grabbing offensive rebounds early. He was the key, making three-pointers and free throws. We couldn’t control him. They put a lot of stress on your defense, and they outplayed us,” Kerr added.
Steve Kerr about FIBA experience
“It’s an unreal experience for all the players. Not only representing the country but also advancing their careers. The high level of competition on the world stage. Everyone on the team loves being a part of this. I’m proud of them, proud of their approach over the last five weeks. This team deserved gold; we just couldn’t get it done. As a coach, you recognize what kind of team you have, and this team is fantastic. They were fantastic,” said Steve Kerr.
About the second consecutive loss at the World Cup
“It means that the game has become globalized over the last 30 years. These games are tough; it’s not the 1990s. It’s not easy to win a championship or the Olympic Games.”
