Law enforcement authorities uncovered that the former Louisville student had engaged specific individuals to falsify invoices from medical personnel, all aimed at scamming the healthcare benefits plan designed for active and former NBA players and their families.
The judge, during the sentencing, remarked that the accused had embezzled a substantial amount of money he earned from playing basketball and should have been financially secure for life.
The former NBA player pleaded guilty to healthcare fraud conspiracy, identity theft, and grand larceny. This case was part of a broader investigation that led to charges against 18 NBA players, with 13 of them admitting their guilt.
A former Louisville star, Williams was the 11th overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft. He played for the Nets, Rockets, Kings, and Celtics. He also had stints in China and tried his luck in South America.
