Alex Mumbru, the head coach of Spanish Valencia, spoke to the Spanish “AS” ahead of the start of the new EuroLeague season about the state of the club.
The Spanish expert is entering his second season as the coach of the EuroLeague team, but he primarily discussed the issues from the previous competitive year.
“Last year was not perfect. We competed very well at certain moments. With a few more wins in the ACB league and in the EuroLeague, we would have been in a much better position. Ultimately, expectations were high, and we didn’t meet them. This has to be considered year by year; there’s a new preparation pattern. What we want is for the fans to be proud of a team that leaves a mark. Sacrifice and effort must always be present,” Mumbru began.
He then turned his attention to the team’s best player, Jared Harper. Harper attempted to make it to the NBA but will ultimately wear the orange jersey again.
“He took advantage of his opportunities in the NBA, and we considered him at a time when the team was not fully built. He was an interesting option because last year, we paid the price for it being his first year outside the United States, not knowing about the EuroLeague, not knowing about Valencia. Now, he’s a player who knows all about that. He accepted our proposal, and we are thrilled to have him.“
Goals for the upcoming season
He spoke about the goals for the upcoming season, the former Spanish national team and Real Madrid basketball player. Alex Mumbru also emphasized the importance of the new arena and academy the club possesses.
“This year, we returned by invitation, but we must do things right. Last year, we competed for the playoffs, we had a good EuroLeague, even though we ran out of steam towards the end, especially in away games. The club is clearly focused on the EuroLeague. For the club, for the new arena being built, which will be the best arena in Europe, this is not something I say lightly, and of course for L’Alqueria, our academy where 300 kids work to reach the first team,” Mumbru concluded.
