Ilias Zouros has been appointed as the new coach of AEK, a move confirmed by the club through an announcement on social media.
The Greek coach arrived in Athens after the club terminated its contract with coach Joan Plaza, who failed to meet the board’s expectations. Many players have come and gone from AEK. Names like Ben McLemore, Mfiondu Kabengele, and Austin Hollins have worn the “Queen’s” jersey this season.
The Greek strategist has a very rich career. He has coached Zalgiris, Olympiacos, Anadolu Efes, Buducnost, Peristeri, and many others. His most recent engagement was with the Georgian national team, which he led to the FIBA World Cup last year.
As we’ve already mentioned, AEK is having a very turbulent season. They are currently in seventh place in the Greek league standings, but there might be a glimmer of hope.
It’s called the FIBA Basketball Champions League, where the “Queen” is still competing in the playoffs. Their next match will be against Hapoel Holon on January 30th. Ilias Zouros will make his debut on the yellow-black bench then. Also AEK is in a tough group with Promitheas who got the better of them by just one point (80:79) and Murcia.
