Virtus head coach Sergio Scariolo annoyed the owner of the club, Massimo Zanetti, so much so that the first man of the team from Bologna considered terminating the contract with him, reports La Repubblica, as reported by Sportando.
Scariolo talked about expectations at the press conference, noting that he wasn’t the one putting the team together.
“Goals and philosophy? That is a question for management. The club built this team and they gave it to me. The roster was built by the club’s management and we have to give them credit for being able to build a team like this with the available budget. Now it’s up to us to achieve the best we can“, said Sergio Scariolo on that occasion.
Zanetti, according to the Italians, was not enthusiastic about that presentation. However, the best coach of the 21st century still has a year left on his contract. In case of termination, he would be entitled to more than one million euros. That luxury was too much for the dissatisfied owner, who had to give up the original idea.
Scariolo was already on the verge of leaving Bologna at the end of the season, but for the same, financially unfavorable reasons, the club’s management could not terminate the contract with him.
The Italian expert was also one of the main candidates for the position of the first coach of the Toronto Raptors, and that job was eventually taken over by the Serbian expert Darko Rajakovic.
When it comes to the EuroLeague, the Virtus competition starts on October 5th against Zalgiris.
