Zalgiris is already laying the groundwork for the next season. The Lithuanian champions have extended their contract with Laurynas Birutis.
With the arrival of coach Andrea Trinchieri, the 26-year-old center, who stands at 213 cm, has moved to the starting center position. Under the guidance of the Italian, Birutis has become the third most valuable player for Zalgiris in the EuroLeague, averaging 8.6 points and 4.3 rebounds.
“Here I feel good. Zalgiris is one of the best organizations in Europe, we have a large fan base, so the motivation to stay in Kaunas is high. I grew up in Zalgiris’ youth system. Although I didn’t reach the main team through the most direct path, I found my place here. That also gives me an additional boost,” said Laurynas Birutis.
In the domestic league, he is Zalgiris’ top scorer, averaging 10.5 points and 5.7 rebounds.
“Our goal is to give Lithuanian players who care about Zalgiris and want to play in Kaunas the opportunity to develop at the highest level. Laurinas has had many good games this year, as well as some bad ones, but that’s to be expected from a player who is still developing. I am happy that we will continue to have a player on the upward trajectory in the team,” said Zalgiris coach Andrea Trinchieri.
